About

This product is part of our limited special discount collection. It is offered at a discounted price due to minor imperfections from the production process (such as slight color variations in the print, small marks, or minor flaws in details). These imperfections do not affect the overall use of the product and make each piece uniquely one of a kind.

Cyanotype is one of the oldest and most prestigious photographic printing techniques, creating stunning blueprints using sunlight.

This technique begins with coating high-quality fabrics or papers with a light-sensitive emulsion. The surface is then exposed to sunlight, where the uncovered areas undergo a chemical reaction and develop their characteristic blue tones. Finally, the print is rinsed with water and stabilized to ensure its durability.

Each piece is entirely handcrafted, making it unique. This transforms cyanotype prints into more than just clothing—they become wearable works of art.

Wash & Care Instructions

Your piece is printed with cyanotype, a sun-printing process first published by Sir John Herschel in 1842. The blue is Prussian blue, an iron pigment that forms inside the fabric when we expose it to sunlight. It holds up well to everyday wear, but it has one weakness: alkaline substances break it down. Caring for your piece mostly means keeping it away from them.

1. Choose the right detergent

  • Use a mild, pH-neutral liquid detergent that is free of sodium compounds, phosphates and bleach. Our ZOOZ Cyanotype Detergent is made for this.
  • Always check the label. Avoid any product listing sodium compounds (such as sodium carbonate, sodium percarbonate, sodium bicarbonate or sodium hypochlorite), phosphates, or bleach of any kind. This rules out washing powders, washing soda, oxygen bleach, stain removers and chlorine bleach. These ingredients can fade the blue or turn it yellow, sometimes in a single wash.
  • Do not use fabric softener.

2. Washing

  • Hand wash in cold water (30°C max), with the garment turned inside out.
  • Keep it short. Don't leave the piece to soak, as long soaking slowly draws pigment out of the fabric.
  • Wash only when needed. Airing the piece out between wears is often enough.

3. Drying

  • Lay flat or hang to dry in the shade. Do not tumble dry and do not dry in direct sunlight.
  • The blue looks lighter while wet and deepens again as it dries.

4. Ironing

  • Iron inside out on a medium setting.

5. Everyday wear

  • Let deodorant, perfume and body lotion dry before dressing, and don't spray them directly onto the print. Products containing baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) are alkaline.
  • Sweat and skin oils can change the print over time, so don't leave a worn, sweaty piece sitting for days before washing.

6. Storage and sunlight

  • Store your piece folded in a drawer or closet, out of direct sunlight. Long sun exposure can make the blue fade.
  • Good to know: fading caused by light is largely reversible. If your piece fades in the sun, keep it in a dark place for a few days. The pigment reacts with oxygen in the air and the blue usually returns. Fading caused by washing or alkaline products does not come back, which is why the steps above matter.

7. A living print

Every ZOOZ piece is exposed by hand under the sun. Small variations, and a gentle softening of the blue over the years, are part of the character of cyanotype.
